Alkalinity is the new global buzzword. With the Alkaline Movement taking off globally, more and more people are realizing the true value of a lifestyle which keeps the body’s pH levels alkaline.
Typically, people are encouraged to eat 70 to 80 percent alkaline forming foods and 20 to 30 percent acid forming foods in order to maintain favorable pH levels in the body. However, apart from eating the right kinds of food, proper hydration also plays a vital role in keeping the body slightly alkaline and functioning optimally.
The human body is approximately 75% water, which means it is important to keep the body well hydrated with the right kinds of fluids. Water has a pH level of 7 which means it is neutral. This helps to keeping maintain the body’s pH balance at levels that will allow it to function well. When the body is deprived of adequate water, it can result in energy loss, digestive problems, and other health concerns. According to a six-year study published in the May 1, 2002 American Journal of Epidemiology, people who drink more than 5 glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank less than two glasses.
Also, drinking the equivalent of 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, and drinking 2 liters of water a day decreases the risk of breast cancer by 79%. WOW!
However, the quality and kind of water you drink to stay hydrated is a very important consideration. According to experts, tap water leaves acid traces in the body due to its dissolved carbon dioxide content. This means acid forming, not alkaline forming. So if tap water is not ideal, what should you drink? The answer is simple: people should be drinking water that is rich in minerals, free from toxins, filtered, and has an alkaline pH.
The easiest way to make alkaline water is by infusing it with organic lemon juice. In spite of being acidic, lemons leave alkaline traces in the body. Lemon water effectively alkalizes, and also adds a distinctly pleasant flavor to an otherwise plain glass of water. Another option is adding powder to alkalize your drinking water. One such alkalizing product is 7.2 Alkaline Booster, which can be added to any acidic beverage (coffee, tea, water...) to make it less acidic and more alkaline.
You can also ionize your water to make it more alkaline. There are water ionizers available today that you simply attached to your faucets that effectively adjust the pH of water.
Then of course there are alkaline water brands are available that people can simply purchase and drink as is. In general, alkaline water that is mineral-rich and acid-free effectively flushes out toxins from the body, rehydrates the system, and promotes detoxification. It also effectively neutralizes the acids present in the body and aids in creating an alkaline environment which fosters better health. It also promotes fewer occurrences of headaches, increased energy, clear thinking, easy respiration, less throat irritation due to the reduction of mucus, healthy heart function, fewer occurrences of 'feeling sick', more stable and regular bowel movements, and a decreased likelihood of developing chronic disease
Alkaline water may also provide the following benefits:
- It helps slow aging by acting as an antioxidant to fend off free radicals. It also keeps the skin well hydrated and moisturized, making it less prone to wrinkles and improving its texture and elasticity.
- It helps in preventing chronic cellular dehydration which compromises the immune system making the body more prone to diseases.
- It fosters weight loss by keeping the body alkaline, which then reduces fat storage by releasing acidic waste build up.
